Professor Haroon Bhorat, Professor of Economics and Director of the Development Policy Research Unit, University of Cape Town
Haroon Bhorat is Professor of Economics and Director of the Development Policy Research Unit, at the University of Cape Town. His research interests cover labour economics, poverty and income distribution. Prof. Bhorat holds a highly prestigious National Research Chair on the theme: ‘Economic Growth, Poverty and Inequality: Exploring the Interactions for South Africa’.
He was recently appointed to the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC), having also served as an Advisor on the South African Parliament’s High Level Panel on Acceleration of Change and Transformation.
Prof. Bhorat is a Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and is an IZA Research Fellow.
He sits of the Boards of: the UNDP’s 2019 Human Development Report; the UNU World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER); the UN/WHO’s High Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth; the World Bank’s Commission on Global Poverty; and he was Head of Research for the UN’s High-Level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
He was an economic advisor to two past Ministers of Finance, and previous South African Presidents, formally serving on the Presidential Economic Advisory Panel.
Prof. Bhorat has a PhD from Stellenbosch University, studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was a Cornell University research fellow.
