Wambui Gichuri, Acting Vice President of the Agriculture, Human and Social Development Complex at the African Development Bank Group

Wambui Gichuri is the Acting Vice President of the Agriculture, Human and Social Development Complex at the African Development Bank Group. She is responsible for the Bank’s strategy, lending and other activities in agriculture, water and sanitation, education, and health, as well as the bank-wide work on employment and gender equity. Elevated to the position in July 2020, Gichuri leads the provision of technical expertise for the Bank’s multi-billion-dollar response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa. Gichuri joined the African Development Bank Group in 2018 as Director of the Water Development and Sanitation Department. This portfolio oversees the Bank’s $4.5 billion water sector program covering 44 countries and multinational projects. The Department includes the Water Development, Coordination and Partnerships division, as well as the Water Security and Sanitation division. She also manages the African Water Facility, a project preparation facility housed in the Department. Before joining the African Development Bank, Gichuri worked for the World Bank for two decades in multiple capacities in the water sector. As Practice Manager she was responsible for leading sector strategy implementation, managing a water portfolio including water supply, sanitation, water resources management, irrigation and drainage in 12 countries in Africa (2016 – 2018), and prior to that, in the Latin America the Caribbean region (2012 – 2106). Gichuri had earlier worked for the Business and Economics Research Company in Kenya, first as Project Manager and later as Deputy Research Director. In the later position, she led the Task Team for a 10 Kenyan district-program funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, in addition to overseeing the company’s operations, staff and budget. Gichuri holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, as well as a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in Economics and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Sociology from the same university.
